The tradition of smoking pipes is seen throughout history. Native American cultures used a pipe called a calumet as a ceremonial diplomatic tool. In the 16th century, tobacco was brought to Europe and in the 19th century, Chinese metal smoking pipes were created as a new means of ingesting opium.
